FEBRUARY - After the most difficult wintery weather of recent times Brentwood U3A eventually greeted 2010 with the first of the year’s Social Events at Shenfield Parish Hall.   For our afternoon’s entertainment Annette had originally booked the same troupe of professional artists we have had the pleasure of seeing in recent years only to find they had to cancel owing to their government grant being withdrawn.   During these Credit Crunch times a more local group agreed to entertain us instead.  Coming from Witham the group, called “Pat’s People”, entertained sixty of our members with a very enjoyable performance.    There were three excellent lady singers who delighted us with many of the old favourite songs, comedy and serious, changing their costumes innumerable times to fit the numbers they were performing. One man and his son sang accompanied by their guitars.   All of them were supported by a proficient keyboard player who we later discovered was aged 89!  He in turn was accompanied by a trumpet playing gentleman of similar age who occasionally, it has to be said, did remind some of us of the old Eric Morecambe/Andre Previn routine where Eric said he was playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order!  Nevertheless the whole along with an excellent cream tea ensured that those of us who attended had a very enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment.
